Cheer Bentwood Dining Chair: Size Guide and Tables It Suits

By Dining1004 min read

Two Cheer dining chairs with charcoal upholstery and walnut-finish bentwood frames beside a round pedestal table, one turned to show its wooden back and S-shaped supports

The Cheer is a compact, armless dining chair with a mid-century look. A padded seat and a curved padded backrest sit on a bentwood frame, and two S-shaped bentwood supports link the back to the seat. The legs splay outwards slightly, which gives the chair a steady stance and a lighter look than straight legs.

It comes in Charcoal, Olive and Blue. This guide covers whether it will work in your room: how it sits at a 75cm table, how it fits round each of our tables, and how the three colours differ.

Height and fit at the table

All three of our dining tables stand 75cm tall. The Cheer's 46cm seat sits towards the roomier end of the 25cm to 30cm gap between seat and tabletop that suits most people. That leaves plenty of room for knees, which is helpful for taller diners or anyone who likes to cross their legs at the table. Shorter members of the family may prefer a cushion for long meals. Our seat height guide goes into this in more detail.

The Cheer's other strength is its size. At 46cm wide and 51cm deep, with no arms and a 74cm overall height that sits just below the tabletop, it is a small, low-profile chair. Four of them round a table barely change how much of the room the table seems to fill. As a general guide, leave about 90cm behind each chair for people to walk past, and see our guide to dining table size and clearances for the full picture.

Which of our tables does it suit?

Pimlico 80cm square. This is a natural match for a small kitchen or flat. The Pimlico seats up to four, one per side, and the Cheer's 46cm width leaves room either side on each 80cm edge. The Oak or Walnut Pimlico brings out the warmth of the bentwood frame, while the Black version sharpens it up. Our Pimlico guide and small dining room ideas have more on tight spaces.

Aaronsburg 120cm round. The Aaronsburg seats up to four. The Cheer's curves and splayed legs look at home round a pedestal table, as there are no table legs to clash with the chair legs. The Rustic Brown top suits the Olive or Charcoal; the Black Marble effect version is a striking backdrop for the Blue. See our Aaronsburg guide.

Dakota 140cm. At 140cm by 77cm, the Dakota takes two Cheer chairs along each long side, going by the usual guide of roughly 60cm of table edge per person. Because the Cheer is narrow, there is plenty of space between chairs. The Dakota's wood-effect top and black X-frame give a more industrial look, which the Charcoal suits best. Read our Dakota room planning guide.

Charcoal, Olive or Blue

Charcoal. A hard-wearing charcoal-grey fabric on a walnut-finish frame. It is the most understated of the three and the most forgiving with everyday marks. It works in almost any scheme, from white kitchens to darker, moodier dining rooms.

Olive. A textured olive-green fabric on a walnut-finish frame. Green and warm wood tones are a classic mid-century pairing, and the Olive leans into that look more than the other two. It suits rooms with plants, natural materials and warm lighting.

Blue. A textured blue fabric on a bentwood frame. It is the brightest of the three and gives a fresher, lighter feel. It works well against white walls and pale floors, and can lift a room that feels a little dark. Have a look at the photos on the product page to see how the frame tone sits with your floor.

If you want to use the Cheer alongside another chair, for example two Cheers on one side of a table with a different chair opposite, our guide to mixing dining chairs around one table explains how to keep it looking deliberate.

Living with it

The Cheer is simple to look after.

  • Vacuum the upholstery regularly, ideally with a soft brush attachment, to lift dust and crumbs.
  • Blot spills straight away with a clean, absorbent cloth rather than rubbing them in.
  • Wipe the wooden frame with a soft cloth.
  • Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners.
  • Keep the chairs out of prolonged direct sunlight and away from heat sources, which can fade the fabric.
  • Check and tighten the fixings from time to time.

Where to see them

Each colour has its own product page: Cheer in Charcoal, Cheer in Olive and Cheer in Blue. For something in wipe-clean faux leather, compare the Camden, or browse the full range in dining chairs.

Delivery is free to mainland UK and most orders arrive in 3 to 5 working days. If they do not suit your room, you have 30 days to return them.
