Elara Rattan Dining Chairs: Size Guide and the Tables They Suit

By Dining1004 min read

Two Elara dining chairs with light wood and rattan backrests, white seats and black metal legs, one seen from behind, beside a round light wood dining table

The Elara is an armless dining chair with a rounded backrest that sets a rattan panel inside a natural wood frame. The seat is white PU leather with foam filling, and the chair stands on black powder-coated metal legs. It is sold as a set of two, in one finish, so this guide concentrates on fit and on what to put it with.

Size and fit

The Elara is a slim chair. At 47cm wide it leaves plenty of spare table edge against the usual guide of about 60cm per person, so it is a good option when you want to seat four without the table feeling crowded.

The seat height is 47cm. Every dining table in our range stands 75cm tall, which puts the seat to tabletop gap inside the 25cm to 30cm range generally recommended for comfortable eating. For a fuller explanation, and how to measure your own table, see our guide to dining chair seat height and table height.

The overall depth is 54cm, with a 40cm seat depth. That shorter seat suits people who like to sit upright at the table, and it keeps the chair from sticking out far once it is tucked in. As always, leave about 90cm behind the chairs where people need to walk past. Our article on dining table size for your room covers clearances in full.

The listed weight capacity is 113kg (250lbs) per chair.

How many fit round our tables

Pimlico 80cm square. The Pimlico seats four, one per side, and at 47cm the Elara sits on each 80cm side with space to spare. The oak-effect Pimlico is the closest match: a light wood top to go with the natural wood around the rattan, and a black metal base that picks up the chair legs. The walnut-effect and black versions give more contrast. This is a neat set-up for a flat or a kitchen, and our Pimlico guide and small dining room ideas have more.

Dakota 140cm. The Dakota is 140cm long and 77cm deep. Two Elaras sit comfortably along each long side, and the black X-frame base matches the chair legs directly. The wood-effect top is warmer and darker than the chair backs, which gives the set some depth. See our Dakota room planning article.

Aaronsburg 120cm round. The Aaronsburg in rustic brown seats four, and a round table suits the Elara's rounded back. For a sharper look, the Aaronsburg in black marble effect pairs its black top with the black legs, leaving the white seats and rattan to lift it. More in our Aaronsburg guide.

Pairing the Elara with other chairs

The easiest chair to mix with the Elara is the Nora. The two share a 44cm seat width and a 40cm by 37cm backrest, both have a woven back, and both have the same 113kg listed capacity. The Nora uses a walnut-finish wooden frame and a cream seat, while the Elara has a lighter wood back, a white seat and black metal legs. Put a pair of each on opposite sides of a Dakota and it looks like a considered choice rather than a mismatch. Our Nora guide has its full sizes.

For a stronger contrast, the Vienna also has a cane back but sits on a chrome cantilever frame. If you go down that route, keep the two styles to separate sides of the table. Our guide to mixing dining chairs around one table explains the rules that make a mixed set work.

Because it is light to look at, the Elara also works as an occasional chair at a desk or in a living room, and it will not overpower a room that already has a console table or other furniture along the walls.

Living with the Elara

The Elara is one of the more straightforward chairs in our range to look after. The care guidance on the product page is:

  • Wipe clean with a soft, damp cloth.
  • Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, on the seat and the rattan alike.
  • Keep the chairs away from direct heat sources.
  • Check and tighten the fixings periodically.

A white PU leather seat wipes down after a meal, which makes it a practical choice for a busy kitchen. If you are weighing it up against fabric seats, our guide to dining chair fabrics for family homes sets out the trade-offs.

The chairs arrive flat-packed with illustrated assembly instructions.
