Dakota 140cm Dining Table: How Many It Seats and the Room It Needs

By Dining1005 min read

Dakota dining table with a wood-effect top and black X-shaped base, laid with a bowl and plants, surrounded by pale upholstered chairs in a bright dining room

The Dakota is our 140cm rectangular dining table. It pairs a brown wood-effect top, 4cm thick with softly curved, wave-style edges, with a black X-shaped iron base. The effect is a live-edge slab look on an industrial frame, and it is equally at home in a kitchen, a dining room or a home office.

This guide is about planning a room around it: how many it seats, how much floor you need and which of our chairs suit it.

How many does it seat?

A good rule of thumb is to allow roughly 60cm of table edge per person. Along a 140cm long side, that gives two people room to eat without bumping elbows, so the Dakota seats four in comfort, two a side.

For a birthday or Sunday lunch, you can put one more chair at each end to make six. The 77cm ends are wide enough for one diner each. Narrow chairs make this far easier, and anyone at the end will be closer to the base than the others, so we would keep six for occasional use rather than every day.

The base is a single X-shaped frame under the middle of the table rather than four legs at the corners. That keeps the corners open, which makes it easier to tuck chairs in and to squeeze a fifth or sixth seat round.

How much room does it need?

The guidance most people use is to leave about 90cm between the table edge and the wall, or any furniture, on every side where someone sits. That is enough to pull a chair out and for someone to walk behind a seated diner.

So for the Dakota, take the 140cm length and add about 90cm at each end, then take the 77cm depth and add about 90cm on each long side. If you are not seating anyone at the ends, you can cut those end gaps back to what you need to walk past comfortably.

If your room is tight, one long side can run along a wall, with chairs on three sides only. That turns it into a table for three day to day, while still giving you the full length for serving dishes. Our guides to dining table size for your room and small dining room ideas cover these layouts in more detail.

A console table along the wall behind the chairs can hold serving plates and lamps without eating into your walkway. See using a console table in the dining room for how to size one.

Which of our chairs fit around it?

The Dakota stands 75cm high. Most people are comfortable with roughly 25cm to 30cm between seat and tabletop, and every chair below sits within that range. The top is 4cm thick, so if you or your family are tall, a chair towards the lower end of that list will give a little more room for thighs under the edge. Our guide to dining chair seat height explains the measurements.

For four people, any of these works. If you want six, choose one of the narrower chairs, such as the Dany or Cheer, so the end seats do not crowd the corners.

The Marlow has integrated armrests and is 56cm wide. Two fit along each long side, but chairs with arms often cannot slide fully under a tabletop, so plan on a little more room behind them.

Pairing ideas

The Dakota's black base makes black metal legs an easy match. The Dusks in black faux leather with crossed black legs gives a coordinated industrial look, while the Sienna in beige fabric on black metal legs softens it. The Daniel in grey brings a curved, wraparound back to balance the table's straight lines.

For a warmer, more relaxed room like the one pictured above, pale upholstery on wooden legs works well. The Dany with walnut-finish legs is a good example.

If you cannot decide, you can put one style on the long sides and another at the ends. Our guide to mixing dining chairs shows how to make that look deliberate.

Colour and finish

The Dakota comes in one finish: a warm brown wood-effect top with a black powder-coated base. The wood effect has a visible grain, and the curved edges give it a natural feel. It sits comfortably with oak or walnut floors and with painted walls in warm neutrals.

Living with it

Wipe the top with a soft, damp cloth and dry it straight away. Avoid abrasive cleaners, bleach and harsh chemicals, and use mats and coasters under hot pans and glasses. Lift the table rather than dragging it when you move it, which protects both your floor and the joints, and check and re-tighten the fixings from time to time.

Is the Dakota right for your room?

If you have space for four every day and six now and then, it is a practical choice. See the Dakota 140cm dining table, browse our other dining tables, or find chairs to go with it in dining chairs. Delivery is free to mainland UK, most orders arrive in 3 to 5 working days, and there are 30 days to return it.
