Sienna Dining Chairs: Size, Fit and Choosing Orange or Beige

By Dining1004 min read

Two orange chenille Sienna dining chairs with cut-out backrests and black metal legs in front of a wooden dining table with glasses and a carafe

The Sienna is an armless dining chair upholstered in soft chenille, with a curved back that wraps round slightly and a cut-out detail across the backrest. It stands on black powder-coated metal legs arranged in a crossed X shape under the seat. We sell it in orange and beige, each as a set of 2.

It is a chair that tucks away neatly, which makes it worth a look if your dining space is tight. Here is how it measures up.

Our two Sienna listings give the overall width and depth the other way round from each other, so we have left those two figures out here. Check the product page for your colour if you are planning to the centimetre.

Seat height against our tables

All three of our dining tables stand 75cm tall. A 49cm seat sits inside the 25cm to 30cm seat-to-tabletop gap we usually recommend, towards the snug end, so you sit up nicely for a meal while keeping some room for your legs. For more on how these numbers work, read our dining chair seat height guide.

Because the Sienna has no arms, it slides in without anything catching on the table. On the Pimlico, with 72cm of clearance listed under the frame, there is space above the seat to push it right in.

How many fit around which table

With a 43cm seat, the Sienna is a fairly compact chair. A useful general rule is to allow roughly 60cm of table edge per diner.

  • Pimlico 80cm square: seats 4, one chair per side. Armless chairs are the easiest fit for a small square table, and the Pimlico's base keeps the corners clear. Our Pimlico guide has layout ideas for small kitchens.
  • Aaronsburg 120cm round: seats 4, with space between each chair. The pedestal base means nobody is sitting astride a table leg. See the Aaronsburg guide.
  • Dakota 140cm: two along each long side for everyday use. The Dakota is 77cm deep, so an armless chair at each end is realistic when you have guests. The Dakota room planning guide covers the room around it.

Leave about 90cm behind the chairs if people need to walk past while others are seated. If space is the main question, our small dining room ideas and dining table size guide go further.

Which of our tables it pairs with

The Sienna's black legs match the black metal bases on the Pimlico and the Dakota, so either gives a joined-up look.

The orange Sienna comes into its own against warm wood. The oak-effect Pimlico keeps things light and bright, while the Dakota and the rustic brown Aaronsburg give a richer, autumnal feel.

The beige Sienna is quieter and works with almost anything. It looks crisp with the black Pimlico or the black marble-effect Aaronsburg, where the black legs tie the chair to the table.

You can also use both colours at one table, for example beige along the sides and orange at the ends of the Dakota. Our guide to mixing dining chairs around one table explains how to keep that looking planned.

Choosing between orange and beige

The two colours share the same frame, legs and design.

  • Orange is the statement choice. It brings colour to a neutral room and is more forgiving of everyday marks than a pale fabric.
  • Beige is calm and easy to live with in light rooms. It will show spills sooner, so it suits households that are happy to deal with them promptly.

Chenille is soft to sit on, but it is a textured fabric rather than a wipe-clean surface. If you have young children, read our guide to dining chair fabrics for family homes before deciding.

Living with it

Our care notes for the Sienna are:

  • vacuum the fabric regularly, using a soft brush attachment
  • blot or spot clean spills straight away
  • for deeper cleaning, use an upholstery cleaner suitable for chenille
  • wipe the metal legs with a cloth and dry them
  • keep the chairs out of direct sunlight to reduce fading
  • check and tighten fixings from time to time, and adjust the foot pads so the chairs sit level

The adjustable foot pads also protect your floor and cut down noise when the chairs are moved. Assembly instructions are included. Beyond the dining room, our notes suggest the Sienna for kitchens, living rooms and bedrooms.
