Oslo Dining Chairs: Will They Fit Your Table and Your Room?

By Dining1005 min read

Two Oslo dining chairs in moss green textured fabric with dark wooden legs, placed at a wooden dining table under a pendant light

The Oslo is a low, rounded dining chair with a padded seat and a padded back that curves round like a bolster, raised on four solid wood cylindrical legs. It is a chunky, comfortable chair that keeps its height down, so a table surrounded by Oslos looks open rather than walled in.

It comes in three colours, Moss, Beige and Camel, each sold as a set of 2. This guide is about fit: how it sits at our tables, how many go round each one, and which colour suits which room.

Height and fit at the table

Our three dining tables all stand 75cm tall. The Oslo seat is 48.5cm high, which sits inside the 25cm to 30cm gap between seat and tabletop that most people find comfortable. It gives a relaxed position without leaving you perched above your plate. Our seat height guide explains how to check this against the underside of your own table.

The more unusual number is the overall height. At 74cm, the Oslo is just under the height of the tabletop, so from across the room the chair backs line up with the table edge. That is the reason to choose it in an open-plan space or a kitchen-diner, where tall chair backs can block the view through the room.

The trade-off is width. At 56.5cm, the Oslo is one of the broader chairs we sell, so it needs its full share of table edge. The usual guide of roughly 60cm per person is a good fit for it, but there is little spare for squeezing in an extra seat. Leave about 90cm behind each chair for people to pass, as covered in our guide to dining table size and clearances.

Which of our tables does it suit?

Aaronsburg 120cm round. The Aaronsburg seats up to four, and two sets of Oslo chairs suit it well. The rounded seat and back echo the round top, and with no corners to work around, the chairs space themselves evenly. The Moss or Camel against the Rustic Brown top makes a warm, earthy group. Read more in our Aaronsburg guide.

Dakota 140cm. The Dakota measures 140cm by 77cm. Going by roughly 60cm per diner, it takes two Oslo chairs along each long side. The Oslo's width means we would not add chairs at the ends for everyday use. The dark wood legs on the chairs sit comfortably with the Dakota's wood-effect top. Our Dakota room planning guide covers the space around it.

Pimlico 80cm square. The Pimlico seats up to four, one per side, and the 56.5cm chair fits each 80cm side. In a small kitchen the Oslo's low back is a real help, because four chairs round a small square table can easily look crowded. The Walnut Pimlico matches the Oslo's leg tone most closely, and the Oak and Black versions give more contrast. See our Pimlico guide and small dining room ideas.

Moss, Beige or Camel

Moss. A textured moss-green fabric on solid wood legs in a rich brown finish. It is the boldest of the three and the one to choose if the rest of the room is neutral and you want the chairs to carry the colour. Green and brown wood is an easy combination in a room with plants or natural light.

Beige. A soft bouclé-effect fabric on solid wood legs with a walnut-tone finish. It is the lightest and calmest option and suits a pale scheme or a room that already has a lot going on. Being pale, it will show marks sooner than the other two.

Camel. A textured camel-toned fabric on solid wood legs with a dark walnut finish. It sits between the other two: warmer and richer than the Beige, quieter than the Moss. It pairs well with tan leather, brass and warm woods.

If you are planning to mix chairs, for example Oslos on one side of a long table and a taller chair at the ends, our guide to mixing dining chairs around one table has some simple rules for making two styles look deliberate.

Living with it

The care notes differ a little by colour.

  • Moss: vacuum the fabric regularly to lift dust, clean the legs with a suitable wood cleaner, and avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners.
  • Beige: wipe clean with a soft, damp cloth and avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners.
  • Camel: avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, and protect the wooden legs from excess moisture.

For all three, check and tighten the fixings from time to time. Keeping the chairs out of strong direct sunlight will help the fabric hold its colour. Our guide to dining chair fabrics for family homes has more on dealing with spills on textured fabric.

Where to see them

Each colour has its own page: Oslo in Moss, Oslo in Beige and Oslo in Camel. If you prefer a taller, more supportive back, compare it with the Bergen, and browse the full range in dining chairs.

Delivery is free to mainland UK and most orders arrive in 3 to 5 working days. If the chairs are not right once they are in your room, you have 30 days to return them.

Frequently asked questions

What is the seat height of the Oslo dining chair?

The seat is 48.5cm from the floor. With a 75cm dining table that falls within the 25cm to 30cm seat-to-tabletop gap most people find comfortable.

How tall is the Oslo chair overall?

It stands 74cm tall, which is just under the 75cm height of our dining tables, so the backs sit roughly level with the tabletop instead of rising above it.

Are Oslo chairs sold as a pair?

Yes. The Moss, Beige and Camel Oslo chairs are each sold as a set of 2.

What weight can an Oslo chair hold?

Each chair has a maximum weight capacity of 113kg.

Which Oslo colour is best for a busy kitchen?

The Moss and Camel textured fabrics hide everyday marks better than the lighter Beige. All three have solid wood legs in a dark brown or walnut-tone finish.
