Roscoe Rattan Back Cantilever Dining Chairs: Size and Table Guide

By Dining1005 min read

Roscoe dining chair with a woven rattan back in a curved wooden frame, a button-tufted brown faux leather seat and a chrome cantilever base, on a plain white background

The Roscoe is a cantilever dining chair with a woven rattan back and a button-tufted brown faux leather seat, sold as a set of two. Its chrome-plated steel frame curves down from the front of the seat and runs along the floor, so there are no back legs. The look is mid-century café, and it sits well in both modern kitchens and more traditional dining rooms.

Here is what you need to know to decide whether it will work in your room.

Seat height and our tables

All three of our dining tables are 75cm tall: the Aaronsburg 120cm round, the Dakota 140cm rectangular and the Pimlico 80cm square. A useful guide is to leave roughly 25cm to 30cm between seat and tabletop, and the Roscoe's 47cm seat sits comfortably inside that against any of them. If you want the reasoning behind that gap, our guide to dining chair seat height covers it.

How many fit, and how much room

At 48.5cm wide, the Roscoe is a mid-width chair with no arms.

  • Aaronsburg, 120cm round: four fit with space between them, and the pedestal base means no table legs get in the way.
  • Dakota, 140cm by 77cm: two along each long side sit within the usual guide of roughly 60cm of table edge per person. That makes four comfortably, and the ends can take one more each for an occasional six.
  • Pimlico, 80cm square: one chair per side, four in total. The seat width fits easily within each side of the table.

The chair is 45.5cm deep, which is on the compact side, so it does not stick out far when pushed in. Plan for about 90cm between the table edge and the wall behind the chair, which gives room to pull it out and for someone to walk past.

What the cantilever frame means day to day

A cantilever has no back legs. The frame is a continuous C shape: down from the front of the seat, along the floor and back. That has a few practical effects.

There is a slight natural flex when you sit, which many people find comfortable over a long meal. Because the frame runs along the floor as a pair of rails, the chair tends to glide out rather than rocking back on two legs. And with no rear legs, there is less to trip over when chairs are pulled out around a busy table.

The Roscoe's base is chrome-plated tubular steel. If you are new to this style, our explainer on cantilever dining chairs goes into how they work and who they suit.

Which tables it pairs with

Aaronsburg in rustic brown. The warm brown faux leather seat and rattan back pick up the brown wood-effect grain of the Aaronsburg. It makes a relaxed four-seater for a kitchen or breakfast room.

Dakota. The Dakota has a warm wood-effect top on a black iron base. Chrome with black is a mix of metals, so it reads as eclectic rather than matched. If you prefer everything to coordinate, a chair with black legs is the simpler choice. If you like a bit of contrast, the rattan and brown tones tie the chair back to the tabletop.

Pimlico in walnut or oak. The Pimlico in walnut effect or oak effect makes a compact four-seater for a small kitchen, with the rattan and wood tones working together. See our small dining room ideas for layouts.

The Roscoe also works as part of a mixed set. Two Roscoes on one side of a table and two upholstered chairs on the other is a common approach, and our guide to mixing dining chairs explains how to keep it looking planned.

Colour and materials

The Roscoe comes in one colourway: a brown PU faux leather seat, a natural-toned woven rattan back in a rubberwood frame, and a chrome base. The rattan is synthetic PP and PE webbing rather than natural cane, and the seat is faux leather rather than leather.

That combination suits rooms with wood floors, warm whites and greens, and other natural textures such as linen and jute. The chrome frame adds a little shine, which stops the look from feeling too rustic.

Living with it

This is an easy chair to keep clean. Both the faux leather and the synthetic rattan are water resistant, so a damp cloth handles most spills. Wipe spills up straight away to prevent staining, and avoid harsh chemical cleaners. Button-tufted seats can collect crumbs in the dips, so a quick wipe along the stitching after meals keeps it looking tidy.

The seat is padded with high-resilience foam, and the slanted back frame gives some lower back support over a long dinner. If you are weighing up fabrics for a busy household, our guide to dining chair fabrics for family homes compares faux leather with the alternatives.

Frequently asked questions

What is the seat height of the Roscoe dining chair?

The seat is 47cm from the floor. Against a standard 75cm dining table, that leaves a comfortable gap between seat and tabletop.

Are Roscoe chairs sold in pairs?

Yes, the Roscoe is sold as a set of 2 chairs.

Is the Roscoe real leather and real rattan?

No. The seat is brown PU faux leather and the back is synthetic PP and PE rattan webbing in a rubberwood frame. Both are water resistant.

How much weight does a Roscoe chair hold?

Each chair has a maximum weight capacity of 136kg.

What is a cantilever chair?

A chair with no back legs. The frame runs down from the seat in a C shape and along the floor, so the seat is supported from the front and has a slight give when you sit.
