Fitzroy Fluted Console Table: Will It Work in Your Dining Room?
By Dining1005 min read

The Fitzroy is a slim console with a fluted front, rounded ends and slender round legs. Fluted tambour doors slide across to hide a storage compartment, and an open shelf sits underneath. It comes in black or walnut, both with gold-tone handles.
It is often sold as a hallway piece, but its shape and storage make it a good fit for a dining room wall too. Here is what you need to know before you put one behind your table.

Size and fit in a dining room
Wall length
At 120cm wide, the Fitzroy needs a clear run of wall a little longer than that, so it does not look squeezed between a door frame and a corner. It is a mid-length console: long enough to anchor a wall and carry a lamp and a mirror, short enough for a typical dining room where one wall has a door and another a window.
Depth against a walkway
The Fitzroy is 30cm deep. That is slim, but in a dining room it still counts. As a general guide, leave about 90cm behind a pulled-out chair for people to walk past, and measure that from the front of the console rather than the wall. If the console sits behind a row of chairs, the table needs to move out by its depth as well. Our guide on what size dining table suits your room has the full method.
The sliding doors help here. A hinged door would swing out into the walkway, but a tambour door stays within the footprint of the console, so you can reach the napkins without anyone moving their chair.
Height against our tables
All three of our dining tables are 75cm tall. The Fitzroy stands at 80.5cm, so its top sits just above the table line. That gives you a clear, separate surface for serving, and it keeps the console from looking like an extension of the table. It is also a comfortable height to set down a dish while standing.
Which of our tables it sits behind well
The best match is the Aaronsburg, our 120cm round table. The Fitzroy is the same width as the Aaronsburg's diameter, so the two line up neatly when the console is centred behind the table, and the rounded ends of the console echo the round top. Our Aaronsburg guide covers that table in detail.
It also works in a smaller room with the 80cm square Pimlico. The console is wider than the table, which is fine against a side wall, and the hidden storage makes up for the lack of a cupboard in a compact kitchen diner. Our small dining room ideas has more on layouts like that.
With the 140cm Dakota, the Fitzroy is shorter than the table. That can work on an end wall, but along the long side the Brunel is the better proportion.
What goes in it
The black version's compartment is 17cm deep and 16.5cm high. That is sized for small, flat things rather than serving dishes: folded napkins, coasters, candles, place cards, a corkscrew. The open shelf below suits a basket of placemats, a few cookbooks or a fruit bowl.
Choosing between black and walnut
Black. A black wood-effect finish with gold-tone handles. It suits a room with other black in it already, such as the black marble-effect Aaronsburg or the black Pimlico. Against a pale wall it gives a strong outline, and the fluting shows up as texture in side light.
Walnut. A brown wood-effect finish with gold-tone circular handles. It is the warmer of the two, and it sits well with the rustic brown Aaronsburg or the walnut-effect Pimlico. If your chairs are in tan or brown, walnut ties the room together without everything being the same shade.
If you are unsure, look at the metal in the room. The gold-tone handles on both versions pair well with brass or warm-toned lighting.
Living with it
The care notes are simple. Wipe it with a soft, dry cloth. The black version's notes add that a slightly damp cloth can be used for stubborn marks, as long as you dry the surface straight away. Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners, and keep it away from direct heat and prolonged sunlight. The walnut version's notes also ask you to protect it from excess moisture.
In a dining room, that means a mat under anything hot and a coaster under glasses and vases. Flowers are a common spill risk on a console, so a tray under a vase is worth having.
Where to go next
The Fitzroy comes in black and walnut. For how a console fits into a dining room more generally, read using a console table in the dining room, or compare it with the drawer-fronted Beaumont. The rest of the range is in console tables. Delivery is free to mainland UK, most orders arrive in 3 to 5 working days, and you have 30 days to return it.
Frequently asked questions
What are the dimensions of the Fitzroy console table?
The Fitzroy is 120cm wide, 30cm deep and 80.5cm high, in both the black and the walnut finish.
Is the Fitzroy solid wood?
No. The black version has a black wood-effect finish and the walnut version a brown wood-effect finish, with gold-tone handles on the sliding doors.
How do the Fitzroy doors open?
They are fluted tambour doors that slide, so they do not swing out into the room. Behind them is a concealed storage compartment, and there is an open shelf below.
Which dining table goes with the Fitzroy?
It suits our 120cm round Aaronsburg well, since the console is the same width as the table and its rounded ends echo the round top. It also works beside the 80cm square Pimlico in a smaller room.
How do I clean the Fitzroy?
Wipe it with a soft, dry cloth and avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners. Keep it out of prolonged direct sunlight and away from excess moisture.
